things i've eaten recently (part 1)

top middle: ceviche de yucatan (white fish, green  tomato, chilli, mint, lime, and coconut milk); top right: tostaditas de carnitas (slow braised pork shoulder, jalapeño, and a tapioca chip); bottom left: tacos de camarones (prawns, habanero chillies and chipotle almond salsa); bottom middle: quesadilla de huitlacoche( mexican truffle, mushrooms, roasted corn, epazote, and cheese); bottom right: mole poblano con pollo (black mole with confit chicken maryland) with baked black beans, sweet corn, and rice

A school friend from NZ popped into Melbourne for a night, so me and D took her to Mamasita, one of our favourite restaurants in Melbourne.

It was mostly delicious. The prawn tacos, the mushroom quesadilla, and the ceviche are particularly phenomenal. The only thing which continually disappoints me is their comida para la familia. The mole poblano con pollo was just OK, but maybe it’s just because I’m neither a fan of mole nor chicken on the bone. The side dishes again were OK, the corn was yum but the beans were a bit meh, and the rice was ridiculously overpriced.

The desserts looked interesting, but we were too full to try them.

left: marry me marge onion ring (dark ale battered onion rings, made to order and served with American mustard and ketchup) and slap-happy cracklin (mexican style crispy fried pork skins served with lime and chilli). middle: rio grande beef ribs (beef ribs, grilled and slow cooked in smoky south-western tequila sauce) and so sweet potato fries (sweet potato chips with moroccan spices, cucumber and hendrick's yoghurt) right: buffalo wings (crispy chicken wings tossed in american hot sauce, served with blue cheese dipping sauce and celery sticks).

I met some friends for dinner and drinks at kodiak club, a bar that specialises in American-style bar snacks, meals, cocktails, and liqueurs.

I don’t usually eat animal fat or skin, but I didn’t really have a choice here.  The food was super fatty and salty in a really delicious but artery-clogging way. For the first time in ages, I ate pork crackling and liked it. It was soft and crispy and really flavourful. The sweet potato fries were really tasty and a bit soggy, but I happen to like soggy chips so that’s OK. The meat was really tender and flavourful, but were cuts that had skin or fat on it.

It was good, but thinking about it makes me feel a bit sick.

chicken and mushroom pie

It was 3 am. Al ate my burrito dinner and my belly was full of cider, barcardi, and lychee liqueur. I had to eat something and pie face pie face was tantalisingly close.

I’d been obsessed with pie face for sometime, mostly really just because of the novelty of the faces, but never actually eaten one.

Verdict: it wasn’t a drunk person’s pie. There were actual chunks of chicken and mushroom in it which I think a sober person would have appreciated more.

creepy toys

I spent Saturday day having lunch with my second cousin’s and their family at their house in Negombo. Their bedrooms haven't changed since childhood, and full of vintage and creepy toys.

Lunch was amazing, with rice and prawn curry, manioc and pol sambol, jackfruit stuffed with dried fish, mallun, ambarella curry and more. I wish I took pictures, but I was too hungry to even think about it.

south

Left: Hikkaduwa; right: sunset, Unawatuna.

I spent a lot of January running in between Colombo and Galle. Most of my previous trips down South have been rushed, so I spent most of my days swimming in the sea or hanging out at the usual spots. This time, I had the luxury of being able to explore the fort and different parts of the beaches.

I found my new favourite place in the fort: the upstairs bit of Serendipity Café. I loved the austere concrete with colourful accents, and open-style of the rooftop/gallery. Their daybed-type seats are perfect to while away hours reading and eating/drinking their delicious food.

I got to meet some interesting wild animals in Hikka, including Rosie the turtle, a hermit crab, and a sea urchin.

And I got to try some interesting desserts:

Left: tiramisu with chocolate lychees (i think). Odd combination, but I didn't eat it to know what it tasted like. The Lighthouse.
Middle: cocount caramel tart with passionfruit. So yum, i went back to get this again. It tasted like coconut caramel pudding and the passionfruit nicely cut through the sweetness. Serendipity.
Right: banana, walnut, and caramel tart. also delicious. I unfortunately had to share this. I won't make that mistake next time. The Lighthouse.

Dinner at Tao

For two of my friend's last night in Colombo, we decided to go to Tao to try their 24-course epicurean degustation menu. Before doing this, we dropped into Music Matters for Big Ears. It was poetry night. Pretty entertaining. But before doing that, we took 5mg of valium. And to make it worse, after Big Ears, my friend made me take another one. I knew it was a dumb thing to do before going out, but I succumbed to peer pressure.

We got to Tao pretty late and hungry. Each tiny portion came out one by one, with a 5-10 minute interval in between. As the meal progressed, service time quickened up and some courses came out together. This was good, because by about course 15 we were getting really drowsy. By dessert, I was pretty much asleep!

I attempted to
photograph the whole menu, but missed some out of hungriness, and many of the photos just didn't turn out well. The photos are presented here in no particular order:

Left: chicken floss caesar salad. Middle: lemon & lime lamb osso bucco. Right: asian spiced mini shepherd's pie served with red curry hinted lamb jus.

Left: blue lip mussels with matsuhisa salsa. Middle: cheesy green cucumber rolls with miso glaze & pickled chilies. Right: smoked turkey with mango salsa.

Left: green asparagus with mozzarella cheese sauce. Middle: trio of soups (tomato & vongole soup; chilled avocado & jalapeno pepper soup; celery bisque with almond flakes). Right: One of the two dessert plates (blueberry & mascarpone tart; espresso creme brulee, baileys banana cream with chip cheese towers; deluxe fruit platter with raspberry sorbet)

As for the food, I think some courses were more successful than others, and often the dishes made from simple, locally available ingredients were better than the ones including expensive, imported products.Stand out dishes for me included the 'lemon & lime lamb osso bucco', 'asian spiced mini shepherd's pie served with red curry hinted lamb jus', the 'celery bisque with almond flakes', the 'chicken floss caesar salad', and the desserts. The desserts are a bit of a haze, but thinking about them brings back pleasant connotations. The dishes I didn't particularly enjoy were the 'smoked turkey with mango salsa', the 'soy glazed pan fried salmon & jasmine rice with curry sauce', and the 'roast duck on noodle cake with hoisin sauce'.

Overall, I think it's a really cool initiative of Tao, and pretty affordable considering that each course is less than 100 rupees! The menu changes monthly, so i definitely plan on going back there.

Yiling has a more a more complete set of pictures and descriptions. She probably didn't take tranquilizers before going there.

lunch at the gallery cafe.

Left: a cute little caterpillar who joined us for lunch. Right: chicken with lemongrass and ginger, on potato and spinach mash.

Left: tamarind and chilli martini. Delicious and unique. (background: pad thai, apparently also good). Middle: jaggery creme brulée. This is my favourite dessert here, and pretty much the only thing I order. Right: I'm can't remember the name of this. I only had one bite and thought it wasn't very nice. There was some meringue, chocolate mousse stuff, and cherries. It was sickly sweet and, I would say, not very sophisticated. I have a major sweet tooth, and this was too sweet for me.
